All about MS in CS (Computer Science) in Germany

MS CS in Germany

MS in Germany is becoming increasingly popular among engineers. In this post, we look at MS in Computer Science (CS) courses and its options in Germany.

Germany has been a pioneer in technological innovations. The country is the origin of inventions ranging from the diesel engine to the printing press. It is home to many engineers and innovators who changed the world for the better.

The German government always has been at the forefront of digitizing the country and is investing in the education of the workforce needed for this mission. It is among the top study destinations for international students aspiring to build a career in Computer Science and the IT industry.

Why consider MS in CS in Germany?

It has the world’s best universities

  • Many of the world’s highest-rated universities (among the top 50 by Times Higher Education) for computer science like the LMU Munich, Technical University of Munich, and Technical University of Berlin are in Germany.
  • To sustain its culture of innovation, the country focuses on delivering a world-class education in engineering and research.

Offers highly affordable education

Studying abroad at a top-notch college is a dream for many students, but not everyone has the financial backing to support this dream. The general rule is: the better the university ranking is, the higher is the tuition fee. Well, Germany is an exception.

  • The education in most of the German public universities is free, or either highly subsidized for local and international students as compared to other destinations popular among international students.
  • The students have to pay an amount of around 250-300 euros at the beginning of each semester called the “Semester Contribution.” This is charged for the administrative expenses, student union, public transport, and certain academic study material.

Cost of living in Germany

  • The cost of living in most German cities is way less in contrast to North American and other European countries favored by international students.
  • As per DAAD (the largest German support organization for the international exchange of students and researchers), the average monthly house rent for a student in Germany is around 350 euros. The rent varies across cities and may reach up to 725 euros for places like Munich.
  • The approximate per month living expense for an international student may vary from 750 to 1100 euros depending on the city. This estimate includes expenditures like food, rent for accommodation, and commuting, but excludes the tuition fee.

Job opportunities

  • Germany is the home of many Tech and IT behemoths like SAP and is the hub for innovation and research.
  • To speed up the German’s visions of digitization, the government is investing in training people from across the world to prepare them for IT and Tech jobs in Germany.
  • A Software Engineer in Germany has an average salary of around 55,000-60,000 euros per year.

And for all the graduate and to-be-graduate students, your academic life is incomplete until you read all the PhdComics. Here’s one for you-

When NYU Poly changed the reject to an admit!

Fall 2015 decisions have started coming out and while we have much to cheer about, this experience of one of our students steals the show.

MP had received a reject from NYU Poly for his MS in Cybersecurity application despite a good profile and early application. He just did not sit dejected and decided to ask the Admission Committee a reason for the reject and restated the credentials that make him a good candidate. Now, in my experience, this is usually the moment when the university sends you a template email citing how they received  a great number of great applications and you just missed the mark. But, luckily for MP, NYU Poly Admission Personnel looked into it, recommended his name to the Admission Office and his reject was changed into an admit. Congrats MP!

Does it mean that you should start harassing every school that rejects you? No. Please don’t! But if you were really sure of your application to a comparatively safer school, it might be worth asking them for a reason politely. Most likely, you will not hear back from them or get that canned response but who knows when the luck might smile upon you? So, this was my feel-good story for the Fall 2015 batch.

I wish you all a good luck and we will be announcing the results as and when they come on our Facebook page – so join us there for updates!

QnA:

Q: What do you think were your strong points before applying?

GPA and project work at CDAC, I believe were my strong points. I also think fulltime work experience at a well-known bank was important.

Q: What do you think were your weak points before applying?

Low GRE score, I had no proper plan and I do lack the ability of expressing myself clearly in the SOP.

Q: What do you think you did right?

I am happy I joined Scholar Strategy!!

Q: What could you have done better?

I would have devoted more time to my SOP to make it more enthusiastic. I should have planned and prepared myself better for the applications and GRE.

Q: What should applicants be more careful about (based on your experience)?

Definitely spend more time in planning for the full application process to be able to see the bigger picture.

Q: Where did Scholar Strategy help you?

Specifically in helping writing the SOP in a very short period. More importantly, suggesting universities more suited to my profile and overall profile evaluation.

Results

Surya has admits from Cornell (where he is heading to), Syracuse (30% scholarship), UIUC MCS program and University of Texas, Arlington and no rejects so far.
