When NYU Poly changed the reject to an admit!

Fall 2015 decisions have started coming out and while we have much to cheer about, this experience of one of our students steals the show.

MP had received a reject from NYU Poly for his MS in Cybersecurity application despite a good profile and early application. He just did not sit dejected and decided to ask the Admission Committee a reason for the reject and restated the credentials that make him a good candidate. Now, in my experience, this is usually the moment when the university sends you a template email citing how they received  a great number of great applications and you just missed the mark. But, luckily for MP, NYU Poly Admission Personnel looked into it, recommended his name to the Admission Office and his reject was changed into an admit. Congrats MP!

Does it mean that you should start harassing every school that rejects you? No. Please don’t! But if you were really sure of your application to a comparatively safer school, it might be worth asking them for a reason politely. Most likely, you will not hear back from them or get that canned response but who knows when the luck might smile upon you? So, this was my feel-good story for the Fall 2015 batch.

I wish you all a good luck and we will be announcing the results as and when they come on our Facebook page – so join us there for updates!

A motivating story for students

As some of you go for your GRE or other exams, this story may help you getting that extra boost of morale.

There was a boy named Masaru in Japan. When he was young, he wanted to learn & master Judo. Unfortunately, he lost his left hand after an accident. He became very sad. When his father saw his condition, he took him to one the Great Masters of Judo in Japan. After thoroughly analyzing Masaru, the Master told him to come from next day for practice. Masaru became very happy after hearing this. On the first day, the Great Master taught him one trick and instructed him to practice it.

After one week, Masaru came back to the Master and asked for teaching him another trick as had practiced the first one long enough. Master replied him to practice the same trick again & again.

Another week passed, months and years passed.

One day, after 10 years of practice, Master informed Masaru that he has nominated his name for the national championship of Judo which will be conducted in Japan, next month. Masaru was shocked after hearing this as he had been practicing only one trick for the last 10 years. Master told him to be relaxed and calm. One the day of championship, Master advised Masaru to remain calm and concentrate on the fight and use only that trick which he has taught him. Masaru won the first fight and then the second one and gradually, he entered semi finals. He couldn’t believe himself. Master again advised him to remain calm and concentrate on the fight and use the same trick again and again. Masaru managed to enter the finals and then he thought that now it’s time to face the best one in Judo in Japan and the opponent will beat him very easily as he knows only one trick. When Master came to know about this, he gave him the same advice.

After the finals, Masaru won and couldn’t believe himself and started crying out of joy. When Masaru went to Master asked him how it happened, the Great Master replied that for the last 10 years, he has been practicing only one trick and he has become master of that. To counter this trick, the opponent has to hold his left hand which which he didn’t have. His weakness became his strength and he won.

Moral: Understand your strengths and weaknesses. Build strategy that will help you succeed and stick to it. A warrior who has practiced one move 10,000 times is more lethal than another who has practiced 10,000 moves one time.

Supreeth featured in news for his Robotics research

One of the reasons we started Scholar Strategy was to help students find happy careers and then help other students. In this regard, we are extremely proud of our first student – Supreeth Rao. He has not only cracked first semester with a GPA of 4.0 (wow!) but his research was recently covered in news. So, anyone interested in Robotics, you have something to look forward to! Let us know if you have any doubts and we’ll help you get some advice from Supreeth.

Supreeth stuck to his passion even though he had to re-apply to get into a program of his choice. You can read his success-story here. His relentless work and dedication was bound to produce results sooner or later and we can only be proud for what he is building 🙂

P.S. we have more exciting announcements to make soon, stay tuned!

NYU students’ company acquired by Twitter

problemsolvers3

The alert popped up in my newsfeed last night. My NYU Stern friends’ company TapCommerce was acquired by Twitter for $100M. It is news like this that makes you want to get out of bed and start working!

Full article on Techcrunch here.

For all you young MS and MBA aspirants, I wanted to point out that your time in grad school can be very precious. Do not rule out entrepreneurship. While you look for jobs, if an exciting idea or opportunity crosses your path, do not ignore it without thinking it through.

The founders of TapCommerce had started working on their idea early on in first year of MBA. With New York’s resources at hand, they could plenty of help and advice close by (this is why I stress on preferring big cities for MS). NYU has a Poly incubator and the founders were also part of InSITE fellowship program that pairs entrepreneurs with MBA students (I was also part of this fellowship). In the end, it was nothing but the sheer hard and smart work they put in but success came early. This can be your story too.

This is one of the most exciting times in Internet history and USA is one of the best places to be.

How to start preparing for your dream career from day one in grad school?

First things first, I wanted to provide an overview of how Scholar Strategy students fared in our first year and I feel both proud and ecstatic. 90% of our students received great/satisfactory admits and are joining grad school in US in 2014. Some of the schools we will be having our presence in are-

UIUC, UCSD, UT Austin, Columbia, TAMU, CMU, Cornell, Duke, WPI, NYU Poly, UTD, USF…

But the picture will be incomplete without mentioning that our students also got admits to these incredible schools-

UIUC, CWRU, TAMU, Syracuse, U of Arizona, Utah, UT Arlington etc. (wait, no USC!!)

We started small and did great. More importantly, we have full faith that our students are heading to brighter and happier phases of their lives. I like to measure my success by happiness created in the process and by that scale, we have done done wonders 🙂

Among our readers who were not officially working with us, I’m sure that many are heading abroad as well. If you would like to share your success story, we would love to publish it here!

And now, a very important announcement for all readers who are headed to USA this Fall-

We are conducting an online talk on ‘How to work towards your dream career when you start grad school‘. This will cover innovative strategies for landing great internships and full-time jobs. Remember that if you don’t land your dream jobs upon graduation, what is the point of having worked your a$$ off so far and getting into these great schools in the first place? We will also be covering some fantastic advice given by students who have successfully found their way into different industries (who we interviewed for our book).

The session will be conducted online on one of the upcoming weekends. We will mail you the date and time as soon as it is decided.

Case Study – MS in MIS (AG)

Presenting the case study of AG’s successful MIS application journey.

AG graduated from NIT Allahabad with a great GPA of 8.55 and incredible GRE score of 332 (170, 162, 5). He had a Toefl score of 112 and will be finishing 3 years of work experience at Oracle before moving for his MIS program. His professional and academic projects gave him enough credibility for the IS stream. His goal was clear from the beginning to go for MIS and not normal MS in CS. This helped focus on exactly the programs he wanted. Sometimes, students are trying to apply for both and their efforts eventually get diluted. Since his profile was above average, he selectively applied to only the top programs – CMU, TAMU, University of Arizona and IU Kelley. His first interview happened for Kelley but the group case study didn’t go as well as he wanted, turning into a reject. However, he aced all apps after that getting into CMU, TAMU and Arizona.

Some lessons-

  1. Stay focused, understand your goals and apply selectively
  2. Do proper school research, talk to current students and reflect that in your essays

MEM admit from Duke
