Feedback on MS EE at UNCC

Scholar Strategy alumnus Sajin joined UNCC for MS EE in Fall 2016. He shares his feedback on the program-

Before coming here, I didn’t feel that UNCC was a good option to do my Master’s in. But, I’ve been proven wrong in every way. The coursework for Embedded systems, computer architecture and operating systems specialization is really good.

Coursework

The advanced course in operating systems offered here is a direct clone of an MIT grad course, and it is extensive enough to prepare anyone to go directly into industry. I highly recommend anyone who wants to do something in operating systems (kernel development, device drivers, etc), to have a look into UNCC.

The research work in computer architecture is really good, and the professor who handles that (Dr. Hamed Tabhki), gives you good relevant research work on that field if you show interest. The focus is on general purpose GPUs and FPGAs. Also, there is an excellent professor in the CS department who offers very good courses on high-performance computing. For Embedded systems, there are decent courses, but things could be better.

Vlsi coursework is not up to the mark, but they’ve hired some new professors recently. I’ll update you on the progress in due time. As of now, UNCC is not a good place to be, if anyone is planning to specialize in VLSI.

In general, I’ll highly recommend UNCC if anyone is interested in computer engineering (There is no MS in computer engineering as such right now, but MS in electrical engineering covers all this).

Finance

In terms of funding, the situation is not that good. None of the MS students get tuition fee waiver, at least in computer engineering. Funding is mostly in the form of TAs and RAs, and most of these will go to people who opt for thesis (the situation is different in computer science).

Employment prospects

In terms of jobs, a lot of people taking up operating systems are getting into good companies. Around 8 of the 22 who took the advanced OS course cracked Intel. People have gotten into Cisco, Amazon, and Texas Instruments. Last year, around 4-5 got into Qualcomm. The job scene is good for people who opted for the right, challenging courses. Also, it is worth mentioning that people who took embedded systems courses are getting lots of calls for embedded firmware jobs.

About my progress, I’ve gotten into Wind River Systems, which is an Intel subsidiary. I am working in the CoreOS team of their flagship real time OS VxWorks. I’m getting to work on cutting edge stuff, and am really enjoying the experience here.

Grad Student shares his feedback after first year at NCSU

Our alumnus Nishad went to NCSU in Fall 2015. He sent a detailed feedback and some great tips for future applicants. Sharing it as it is-

I am currently in my second semester as I started here in Fall 2015. The first semester went well and I got the 4.0 I wanted. This semester I managed to convince one of the professors to pay me (it’s not an RA/TA and it pays very less but its better than nothing and I do not want to spend long hours doing a dining/ library job) for some research work which may hopefully lead to a paper and conference presentation as the field is new and exciting.

I have also secured an internship with GoPro after many other unsuccessful interviews (Apple, Nvidia, Tesla). So right now, it seems good, I will be in the Bay Area for an internship with a smallish company (GoPro has about ~1500 employees) and I have family in the area so I will not be paying rent. Exactly the internship I was hoping for. They have already talked about extending a full-time offer if the internship goes well and I have every intention of making sure I hit the ground running once I get there. If they do, I can probably handle 4 courses next semester and get done with Masters sooner than I expected.

I also wanted to touch upon a few points with respect to the things that went right/wrong with me with respect to choosing my university.

I had admits from NC State, UC Boulder and UNCC. Of the three, it was always going to be between the first two, but I think I should have chosen UC Boulder (I am currently at NCSU)

I would outline the mistakes I made in the following order:

  1. Prejudices/ Preconceived notions: Happens with everyone but I guess I had some preconceived notions about both the universities based on friends telling me things, and even based on the interaction I had with the admissions staff in the university. I clearly remember thinking the UC Boulder admissions in-charge sending long-winding emails (I realize that is kind of my email right now) and I was somewhat put off by it.
  2. Coursework details: On paper, NCSU coursework looked fine but I should have delved more deeply into which courses are available at what frequency and how easy it is to take courses which are not part of your major. In my case, I had a few very important courses only offered by the Computer Science department and they were only available to me if Computer Science students gave up some seats. That never happened and despite repeated discussions with the department I never could end up taking those courses.
  3. Sabbaticals: In India this very rarely happens, so this did not cross my mind and I can be forgiven for this mistake I think. Professors are on sabbatical in the US. Very frequently it turns out. The professor who takes two of the most important subjects has been on sabbatical since I joined the universities and has not yet returned. One of the subjects I took under the replacement professor and frankly he has not been up to the mark. Very disappointing experience.
  4. Get in touch with a person doing the same major at the University: This is again something that seems obvious in retrospect. But all the above points could have been addressed if I took the time to get in touch with someone who could have answered all these questions for me. In my case, getting an RA/TA as a non-thesis Masters student was impossible. Simply put, the university does not allow it. Now this was not very important for me but I can very well imagine someone else who comes along, confident that they will be able to secure an RA/TA due to their academic capabilities.

Success story for MS Robotics

We are very happy to start reporting our success stories and case studies.

wpiSupreeth is one of our earliest and favorite students. He joined SS when he was already working with another counselor. He had a fantastic research profile but not so ideal GPA and GRE. He had applied very ambitiously the first time and received rejects from all. And, now he is studying at one of the TOP programs for Robotics. We helped focusing on stronger schools in his area of interest (Robotics) suited for his profile. Sometimes, we are too blinded by general rankings but when our area of interest is very specific, we need to spend time focusing on finding best programs for our specialization (not necessarily the top ranked in general rankings). Also, we need to decide when to reapply to a program that rejected us and when to not. It isn’t wise to be just obstinate and keep applying to same programs. But most importantly, we should NEVER give up.

I am doing good 🙂
Stayed at NY for a week at my friends’ .. Roamed around the city that never sleeps!-NY.. It was real fun.. NYSE, Subway, Ferry to Staten Island, NY Skyline, Streets of Manhattan, Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge at 11.30 PM, Times Square, Central Park, Rockefeller center, Windows of 5th avenue show, Temples of Flushing Meadows and what not !! 🙂 Really enjoyed it :DThen went to NJ for 2 days to my Brother’s.. Had good food, shopped a lot and then came to Worcester on 5th Jan..Since I was the 1st Robotics student to report at the front office, I was given a liberty to choose my grad advisor- Picked Prof. Taskin Padir (whom I had always wanted to work with !).. Then met him- By god’s grace, he liked my research at RRI.. Now I have been given an opportunity to work at the RiVER lab for the NASA Sample Return Rover challenge-2014 !! 🙂 Prof. Padir said he would give me 3 credits for the work – (called Directed Research) , which would add to my MS degree..It has been a great start Nistha 🙂 Thank you for all the help you gave me…. and Do let me know if something is required of me for Scholar Strategy ! 🙂
